Section 1.0: Social Identity Effect on Life Chances A person’s social identity may be difficult to identify but will include the following aspects to shape their identity and is based upon their group memberships. Social class, gender, ethnicity, ability / disability, nationality, and sexuality shape social identity. Their social identity affects their life chances in the ability to access education, employment, and prosperity. Section 1.1: Social Class Upper Class The upper classes because of their means are more likely to have the resources to access the very best of healthcare (Private), education (Eton), and employment. Middle Class The middle class because of their means are likely to have the resources to access the best in most aspects of healthcare (Private and NHS), education (Private, and the best state schools), and employment. Working Class The working class, because of their limited means are more likely to have no resources to access healthcare (NHS), education (State DfES), and employment and therefore have to accept what has been provided by society. The working class is more likely to commit crimes as a means of necessity or survival. Section 1.2: Gender Access to education would affect both genders equally in the UK unless you factor in social class, whereas in other less economic developed countries, education of women is stereotyped as not necessary, and therefore is less accessible for women.
